WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE YOUR SPORT?
I grew up around rowing--my parents met on the US team at World Champs 1977. I resisted at first playing soccer and lacrosse, but switched to rowing midway through high school, thinking I may have more luck than with the hand-eye sports. I fell in love with the team cameradarie and the work ethic required by everyone at every practice.
WHAT’S BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE PERFORMANCE, AND WHY?
Silver in Lucerne at the World Cup in 2016. Finishing on Kimmy Crow's tails and having the best (maybe first serious) sprint of my life. It was the best race of my life and set me up for success in Rio.
WHAT'S BEEN YOUR TOUGHEST CHALLENGE YOU'VE HAD TO FACE IN YOUR SPORT AND WHAT DID IT TEACH YOU?
All successes are built on failures. I didn't make the team in 2008, and after a few months away from rowing entirely, I re-learned how much I love rowing and re-set my sights on my Olympic dream. I didn't qualify the W1x in 2011, forcing myself to the Last Chance regatta--a brutal place to race but incredible to make it through. I lost singles trials in 2019 and 2021, switching to the double and re-learning how wonderful (and challenging) it is to be in a team boat.
WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? WHAT KEEPS YOU GETTING UP EVERY MORNING?
I love being outside, and a morning on the Charles River is unbeatable. I feel better about myself and my body when I start the day with a workout.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR YOUNGER ATHLETES ENTERING THE SPORT ASPIRING GREATNESS ON THE WORLD STAGE?
Aim high and have fun!
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO OUTSIDE OF YOUR SPORT? INTERESTS? CAREER?
I am an emergency medicine resident in Boston and applying to sports medicine fellowships. I aim to be one of the USRowing doctors one day in hopefully not too long.
