WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE YOUR SPORT?
I chose rowing because it made me feel confident. As a tall, awkward kid, I didn't feel comfortable in my own skin. Rowing really changed that, and gave me deep connections to new friends.
WHAT’S BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE PERFORMANCE, AND WHY?
I think winning the FOQR in my first international regatta in the LW2x was very memorable. It felt like my life was on the line, and I knew that winning would actually change the rest of my life. Somehow at the start I remained calm, however, because in the end, it's just another race.
WHAT’S BEEN YOUR TOUGHEST CHALLENGE YOU’VE HAD TO FACE IN YOUR SPORT, AND WHAT DID IT TEACH YOU?
The toughest challenge I've had to face while rowing was my scholastic career. I was a small openweight with a slow erg, and there were countless times that I wanted to quit because I was so frustrated. It felt to me that no matter how hard I worked, I wasn't improving and no coach was noticing.
WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? WHAT KEEPS YOU GETTING UP EVERY MORNING?
I love training, but I'm motivated by the opportunity to improve and find my full potential. I know I can get better, and that excites me.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR YOUNGER ATHLETES ENTERING THE SPORT ASPIRING GREATNESS ON THE WORLD STAGE?
Don't let current frustration stop you from having the career you deserve. Persistent effort will pay off if you keep your chin up, remain patient, be humble, be coachable, and keep your love for the sport.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO OUTSIDE OF YOUR SPORT? INTERESTS? CAREER?
I had a career in finance before I picked up sculling again after college, and I worked at an asset manager for the last four years. I recently joined Broadridge Financial as a part-time consultant with their Elite Athlete program. I enjoy reading, baking, and spending time with friends and family when I manage to find free time.
